Trade union rights news

All work has dignity, and all workers deserve to be treated with respect by their employers. Trade unions play a decisive role in improving working conditions, safety and wages – yet some governments and employers systematically abuse the right of workers to join existing unions or form new ones. PSI works actively to support the right of workers to free collective bargaining, and to help stop abuses when they occur.

Tunisia: Nobel Peace Prize nomination for the UGTT

Tunisia: Members of the PSI affiliate Fédération Générale de l'Agriculture (a union belonging to the labour central UGTT) exposed corruption by former leaders of the Ben Ali regime.

In recognition of the union’s history and its key role in steering Tunisia away from civil war, four Tunisian universities have nominated the country’s famous trade union central, L'Union Générale Tunisienne du Travail (UGTT), for the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize for its work since its foundation in1946. Affiliate unions of Public Services International represent the majority of members in the UGTT.

Solidarity appeal: Balkan floods

Severe flooding has affected many hundred thousands of citizens and caused grave damage in several Balkan countries such as Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia and Serbia. PSI and EPSU have written to affiliated unions calling on them to provide assistance allowing the unions to support their members and continue union work.

Press release: Ride for workers’ rights and social justice follows ‘Route of Shame 2014’

Led by members of the global union federation Public Services International (PSI), trade union leaders from around the world will join in a ‘Route of Shame’ bicycle ride Wednesday 4 June and visit missions and embassies in Geneva, Switzerland to draw attention to countries which consistently violate workers’ rights. In other cities around the world, PSI affiliates are organizing similar actions.
