Trade union rights news

All work has dignity, and all workers deserve to be treated with respect by their employers. Trade unions play a decisive role in improving working conditions, safety and wages – yet some governments and employers systematically abuse the right of workers to join existing unions or form new ones. PSI works actively to support the right of workers to free collective bargaining, and to help stop abuses when they occur.

Histadrut sign agreement raising the minimum wage in Israel

On 3 December 2014, Histadrut - the General Federation of Labour in Israel - signed an agreement with the Federation of Israeli Economic Organizations raising the minimum wage by NIS 700 (approx. 175.26 USD). Histadrut have also reached an agreement with the government to increase the number of disabled workers in public services to a minimum of 3% by 2017.

Turkey: PSI General Secretary meets dismissed health care workers, denounces attack on labour rights

In December 2014, the hospital of Maltepe University in Istanbul dismissed nearly 100 workers for being members of the Progressive Union of Health Workers. PSI/EPSU ask all affiliates to join the LabourStart campaign calling for the reinstatement of these workers.

Ukrainian workers say no to austerity, demand social dialogue

Close to 2000 people joined the Federation of Trade Unions of Ukraine during a rally in Kiev, Ukraine, on 23 December in protest against the government’s plans to limit constitutional rights at work, social security and pensions.

PSI joins Global Day of Action for the Right to Strike on 18 February 2015

The conflict on the right to strike and the crisis of the ILO’s supervisory mechanism persists. PSI is calling on all affiliates to join in the Global Day of Action, in cooperation with the ITUC and other global unions to defend and promote the right to strike.

Government of Peru tries to silence union leader

PSI is urgently calling for letters of protest to be sent to the Peruvian Minister of Labour in support of Luis Isarra (FENTAP General Secretary) whose permanent union leave has been abrogated by the Peruvian Government. This takes place just before COP20 when Luis Isarra is responsible for coordinating Peru's labour movement mobilisation for the summit.
