Regional Meeting of Public Services International (PSI) Interamerica's Health Sector took place on 8 and 9 November in São Paulo, Brazil. The meeting was considered as part of the reconstruction of the health policy of PSI at a global level.

PSI delegation voices public sector union issues at UCLG world congress

A PSI delegation of Local and Regional Government/Municipal trade unions from Colombia together with representatives of PSI regional and Head offices voiced public sector workers’ issues at the 5th World Summit of Local and Regional Leaders, the Congress of the United Cities and Local Government Global Network (UCLG) that took place 12-15 October 2016 in Bogotà, Colombia.  Held every three years, the Summit elects the new UCLG President and Executive Committee.

All “Eyes on Diabetes”

PSI affiliates across the world are participating in a series of activities today as 957 events are being held in 152 countries to mark World Diabetes Day (WDD) 2016. The theme of this year’s WDD is “Eyes on Diabetes.” This underscores the need for greater awareness by all and sundry on the importance of screening to ensure early diagnosis, particularly of type 2 diabetes, and treatment needed to minimize the possibility of aggravated complications.

TiSA: Trade in Services Agreement is Bad News for Workers and Communities

New Workplace Standards to Curtail Workplace Violence in California Hospitals

The workplace appears set to be safer for health workers in California hospitals, with the approval of new rules by the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA) which would make it compulsory for hospitals and other healthcare facilities to establish violence prevention protocols, with the active involvement of the workers.

From 24 to 28 October 2016, Public Services International, together with Governments, regional and political groups, intergovernmental organizations, civil society, NGOs and many other relevant stakeholders, will be participating in the 2nd public meetings of the Open-ended intergovernmental working group on transnational corporations and other business enterprises with respect to human rights (OEIWG), which could lead to the adoption of an international legally binding instrument on transnational corporations (TNCs or MNEs).

While the European Commission tries to convince the European public that its approach to trade agreements safeguards European public services it simultaneously demands that developing countries public services are undermined.

An international delegation of PSI affiliates and staff will participate in Habitat III, the United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development to take place in Quito, Ecuador, from 17 – 20 October 2016. The United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development is an exceptional event that occurs every 20 years. Habitat II took place in Istanbul in 1996 and delivered at the time the Istanbul Declaration on Human Settlements. Habitat III is expected to deliver a new document, the New Urban Agenda.

Around 70 women representing 22 countries from PSI's Asia Pacific region will launch, during APRECON in Japan, what is being called the "Fukuoka Statement". With the slogan “Unions at the core of women’s economic empowerment in the changing world of work”, the document will serve as a roadmap towards the UNCSW61.
