PSI congratulates Carola Fyschbach-Pyttel, General Secretary of the EPSU, PSI's European branch, on her recent nomination by the ETUC Women’s Committee as woman of the month of May for a 2013 Calendar published by the European Institute for Gender Equality.

The "Women Inspiring Europe initiative: Resource Pool and Calendar" aims at highlighting the achievements of some of Europe’s most remarkable women and promoting their positive influence on breaking gender stereotypes.

Carola was European Regional/Vocational secretary for PSI from 1986 to 1992 then for EPSU from 1992. In 1996 Carola became General Secretary of the EPSU, the very first woman elected General Secretary of an ETUC Trade Union Federation.

Carola has made it a key objective for the organisation to increase women’s participation in EPSU’s Executive Committee and has helped to establish a better visibility of gender equality in general. She also relentlessly puts gender equality policy high on the agenda, in all areas and activities of the public sector.

"It is important to demonstrate that a woman can lead an organisation. That as women, we are capable of participating in public debates and policy making, and decision making. All of these things help to bring about a cultural change. But also to bring about more opportunity for women to actually penetrate leadership or achieve leadership positions" says Carola Fischbach-Pyttel.
