Charlottesville: AFSCME condemns "Nazi white nationalists"

AFSCME has condemned the Nazi white nationalists who incited domestic terrorism at a rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Saturday, August 12.

AFSCME Pres. Lee Saunders and Sec.-Treas. Elissa McBride said, “Now is a moment for all Americans who believe in freedom, tolerance and inclusion to stand up and speak out.” 

To combat hatred and violence, AFSCME is making contributions to the Southern Poverty Law Center and the Anti-Defamation League.

AFSCME has been on the front lines of civil rights and racial justice struggles for decades. In the coming year, through the I AM 2018 initiative, we will honor the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. half a century after he was assassinated during a trip to Memphis to support striking AFSCME sanitation workers.

“Throughout this campaign and in our everyday work, AFSCME members inspire people to create a better American future, one where we recognize and celebrate our common humanity and show respect for all our neighbors,” said President Saunders and Secretary-Treasurer McBride. 

Whether it’s through conversations with our neighbors, attending a vigil or some other community event, AFSCME will continue to prove that our country is so much better than what we saw in Charlottesville.
