Fighting for equality: UNISON materials for LGBT workers

UNISON fights discrimination and prejudice in the workplace on behalf of its lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) members. UNISON works together in local and national groups of LGBT members to campaign and provide support for members and works closely with PSI at the international level.

Historic UN resolution urges States to regulate education providers and support public education

PSI welcomes the new resolution adopted by the UN Human Rights Council urging States to regulate education providers and invest in public education - specifically to “address any negative impacts of the commercialization of education". The resolution was adopted by consensus of the 47 member States of the UNHRC, signalling the strength of the support for the resolution.

On 6 June over 50 thousand trade union members and workers from all over Ukraine gathered in Kyiv for the All-Ukrainian Protest March. Under the slogan «EUROPEAN PRICES - EUROPEAN WAGES!», they rallied near the Parliament and Government houses, protesting against the shock increases in gas price and communal tariffs.

Turkey: DISK Secretary General detained by police

DISK Secretary General, Arzu Çerkezoğlu, was detained by police in Istanbul airport on 17 June, purportedly for “insulting Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan”. Though later released, this does not change the fact that trade union rights and civil liberties are violated on a daily basis in a country “candidate” to join the EU.

United Nations General Assembly High Level Summit on Large Flows of Migrants and Refugees

On 19 September 2016, the United Nations General Assembly will hold a “High Level Summit on Large Flows of Migrants and Refugees” at the UN in New York. The summit will call for a Global Compact on responsibility-sharing for refugees, which includes a comprehensive response plan on refugees and the strengthening of the global governance of migration.

Shady TiSA deal condemned by protesters

While negotiators and ambassadors met in secret to discuss the ongoing Trade in Services Agreement at the EU mission in Geneva, a coalition of international trade unionists and local activists rallied outside, calling for an end to the shady negotiations.
