PSI at the United Nations High Level Dialogue on Migration and Development (HLD)

The United Nations General Assembly will hold a High Level Dialogue on Migration and Development (UN HLD) on 3-4 October 2013 at the UN Headquarters in New York. The objective of this UN HLD is to “identify concrete measures to strengthen coherence and cooperation at all levels, with a view to enhancing the benefits of international migration for migrants and countries alike and its important links to development, while reducing its negative implications” (UN General Assembly Resolution A/C.2/67/L.15/Rev.1, 12 December 2012).

Rosa Pavanelli elected to lead Public Services International

Italian trade unionist Rosa Pavanelli has been elected as the new leader of the global union federation Public Services International, representing 20 million public service workers in 150 countries. Pavanelli says her vision is founded on “giving PSI new energy, and standing up for justice, solidarity, equality, a fairer and more sustainable world.”

The leadership vote took place during PSI’s 29th World Congress in Durban, South Africa (27-30 November 2012). Danish trade unionist Peter Waldorff had sought re-election as general secretary following one term in office.

The survey aims to collect data on the causes and impact of migration in the health and social care sectors. This will help the PSI and affiliated unions to address migration in health and social care sectors.

Fifth Global Forum on Migration and Development

PSI activists joined the trade union delegation to the Fifth Global Forum on Migration and Development Civil Society Days and parallel events that took place in Geneva on 29 November to 2 December 2011. Working on the theme Taking Action on Labour Migration, Development and the Protection of Migrant Workers and their Families, PSI, together with the ITUC and the Global Union Federations, joined forces with civil society organizations in questioning governments for their lack of leadership in addressing the exodus of migrants from North Africa, the rising xenophobia, and the failure to apply the rights-based normative framework embodied in the UN and ILO Conventions to deal with migration flows.

Labour Migration is a Decent Work Issue

A 40-member strong delegation of trade unionists will participate in three related events: the Fifth Global Forum on Migration and Development Civil Society Days, the Global Unions Forum on Migration and the People’s Global Action on Migration, Human Rights and Development from 29 November to 2 December in Geneva, Switzerland. PSI is leading the delegation together with sister global unions BWI, EI and ITUC.
