EI-PSI Sexual Diversity Forum

It was on Nelson Mandela’s 93rd birthday that 150 delegates from 45 countries around the world gathered in Cape Town, South Africa for a two-day forum on sexual diversity, organised jointly by two global union federations: Education International (EI) and Public Services International (PSI). This was the third joint LGBT forum for EI and PSI, and was billed as the largest LGBT event on the African continent.

Every year, the International Labour Conference (ILC) takes places in Geneva. It brings together more than 5000 delegates and is often called an international parliament of labour. The Conference establishes and adopts international labour standards and is a forum for discussion of key social and labour questions. The ILC took place 5-20 June 2013.

Enel Global Framework Agreement (2013)

On 14 June 2013 in Rome, Italy, the global unions Public Services International and IndustriALL signed a Global Framework Agreement with the multinational enterprise Enel, which operates in more than 40 countries.

PSI policy on International Trade Agreements

PSI’s Executive Board (EB–145) endorsed in May 2013 a proposal to increase PSI’s work on trade agreements. This work will focus on the most prominent threats to our affiliates, including ensuring that trade agreements are not used to open public services to private commercial activities but are used to contribute to the application of international labour standards to protect workers’ rights.

Tax Justice for Social Justice

The prevailing international tax rules and practices are more and more undermining the ability of governments in the Global South and the North to compel corporations and wealthy individuals to pay their fair share of taxes. Multinationals and wealthy individuals continue to dodge taxes with impunity, while tax competition has led to reduced tax burdens on corporations and financial wealth. As a result, ordinary people carry a disproportionately heavy burden of taxes and social services lack adequate resources to meet the needs of citizens.
