South Korea: The world is watching!

On 25th February the new Korean President Park Guenhye will take office. Let’s make sure that she will not forget this day! PSI calls upon President-elect Park Guenhye to commit to the basic human and labour rights that public workers are entitled to, to recognize the KGEU and to reinstate the dismissed workers. This would be a signal of hope that would pave the way for a renewed dialogue and normalization of labour relations in the public sector in Korea.

PSI represents more than 20 million public sector workers around the world. Our Korean affiliates are receiving daily support from fellow trade unionists in countries that include Korea’s main trade partners: Japan, Australia, the United States, the European Union and elsewhere. The public at large is aware of the disgraceful treatment of trade unionists in Korea, the lack of respect for international standards and how hundreds of workers lose their jobs because they choose to exercise their rights and belong to unions

PSI supports the Korean Government Employees’ Union (KGEU) and its leader, Kim Jungnam, in their call for the recognition of their union and the reinstatement of 137 trade union members who were dismissed because of their affiliation to the KGEU.

We call upon President-elect Park Guenhye to commit to the basic human and labour rights that public workers are entitled to, to recognize the KGEU and to reinstate the dismissed workers. This would be a signal of hope that would pave the way for a renewed dialogue and normalization of labour relations in the public sector in Korea.

This campaign will continue until workers’ rights are respected in Korea. The world is watching.

Please visit the Korean embassy in your country and promote our Labourstart Campaign among your members!
