Water: A human right that remains a political mirage

More efforts and stronger commitment for water as a human right is needed, says "water justice activists".

When the United Nations adopted the human right to water two years ago, it was done over considerable opposition from the US, the European Commission and several European governments.

A group of 15 international organisations now draws attention to the lack of implementation. The group calls on the UN governments to speed up the implementation and take concrete steps.

In a letter sent to member states, the organisations said that as “governments aggressively pursue false solutions to the environmental and economic crises, the situation will only deepen the water injustices that our organisations and communities have been fighting for decades.”

EPSU, the European Federation of Public Service Unions, says that this shows the need for continued pressure also in the EU to ensure governments live up to their commitments.
