Young workers

The national activity of the PSI - DGB BW project was conducted in Jakarta, Indonesia. Anchoring on the theme “Strengthening Women and Youth Leadership in the Trade Union Movement”, 27 young people from six affiliated unions attended the three-day workshop on April 23-25, 2019.

A cross section of young workers across PSI affiliated unions in French-speaking Africa converged in Cotonou, Benin, from October 31, 2018 to November 2, 2018, for a workshop aimed primarily to discuss PSI’s political agenda from the young workers’ perspective.

Advances in technology mean that a four-day working week is a realistic goal for most people by the end of this century, the leader of the UK's trade union movement has said. She gets support from the biggest trade union in Norway, Fagforbundet, saying “our backdrop is the same” and there is a great “need for reorganizing our working hours”.

The United Nations designated the theme of International Youth Day 2018 as “Safe Spaces for Youth”. The UN explains that “without the existence of safe space, youth may feel intimidated to freely contribute to the community".

PSI General Secretary, Rosa Pavanelli, arrived in Japan on 22 June for a three-day visit, invited by PSI Japan Council (PSI-JC), the National Coordinating Committee of PSI affiliates in the country.

On May Day, Comrade Donald Gyimah, a member of PSI’s affiliated union the Health Services Workers’ Union (HSWU) in Ghana, was announced as the 2018 National Best Worker.

Affiliates from member countries Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand committed to support the subregional and regional priorities and action plan.

For the second year, in collaboration with the People’s Health Movement (PHM) on the Global Health Watch programme which PHM organizes for the civil society movement in international health, a young health activist from a PSI affiliate participated in the WHO Watch at the World Health Organization Executive Board session in January 2018.
