Refugees on a boad

Public Services International delegates at United Nations High Level Dialogue meetings in New York are marking the “Day of Mourning” for the African migrants who’ve drowned or are still missing, after a boat capsized off the coast of the Italian island of Lampedusa on 03 October 2013. A day of national mourning is being observed across Italy today (04 October).

At least 114 men, women and children have died and at least 200 more are still unaccounted for following this accident. None were wearing lifejackets. Migrants who arrive on the Italian island of Lampedusa, which is just 11 kilometres from Tunisia, are processed in centres, screened for asylum and often sent back home.
