Ecuador's government responds to urgent action campaign

24 January 2012
Several hundred letters of protest were sent to the government of Ecuador protesting at the arbitrary dismissals of thousands of public sector workers, and the plans to dismiss thousands more. Combined with other actions by PSI, the campaign generated a useful response from the government.

The Minister for Labour Relations, Richard Espinosa Guzmán, has replied with the attached letter (original in Spanish - English translation supplied by PSI) and the President's office has also asked the labour minister to explore the possibility of a meeting with PSI representatives in order to discuss matters further.

PSI will continue to monitor the situation closely and to keep up the pressure on the government of Ecuador to end these unfair dismissals and to establish a proper and meaningful dialogue with public sector unions in Ecuador.
