Massive strike in India

22 February 2013
India - HMS union on strike
An estimated 100 million workers took to the streets for a two-day strike organised by national trade union centres in India. PSI affiliated unions representing workers in the electricity, defense, water and municipal sectors were there in force.

The strike was called to demand measures for employment generation, enforcement of labour laws, halting disinvestment in public sector undertakings, refusal of contract work of permanent nature, compulsory registration of trade unions and ratification of ILO Conventions 87 and 98.

Brother Adil Shariff, General Secretary of Andhra Pradesh Municipal Contract Workers Union (INMLBWF) said his union joined the strike to demand the regularisation of services provided by contract workers in municipalities and corporations in accordance with the Contract Workers (Regulation & Abolition) Act, 1970.

Sister Abha Chaturvedi, President of Hind Mahila Sabha (HMS) reported that her union demands the establishment of a welfare board which would supervise the funds for workers in addition to the recognition of the policies relevant to social security issues like health, education, sanitation etc. HMS has further claimed for due wages to be paid to workers employed on contracts in the public sector.
