The PSI – which represents 8 million health care workers – believes that care must be available to people who need it, not just to those who can pay. Health care is dangerous work. Over 2,000 signatures to halt declining working conditions and pensions at Geneva hospitals

More than 2,000 employees from the Geneva university hospitals (HUG) in Switzerland have signed a petition asking for dramatic changes to their working conditions and pension fund allowances. Keen to provide quality public services, they denounce the declining work conditions that they face daily, and which prevent them from providing the services required.

Ending workplace violence and harassment in public services

The recent deaths of two young women health workers in Nigeria, Saifura and Hauwa, are the latest tragic examples of the dangers faced by workers when delivering public services. Norwegian Nurses Organization Forced to Call Off Strike

Nurses from PSI affiliate NSF (Norwegian Nurses Organisation), on strike since 25 October, were forced to resume work after the Association of Norwegian Enterprise announced a lockout - the first ever in Norwegian healthcare - and the Norwegian government had to step into the conflict.

Speaking at a meeting of the National Educational Health and Allied Workers Union (NEHAWU) last week, the South African Health Minister, Mr Aaron Motsoaledi said the country’s health system is overburdened by foreigners. This is a dangerous playing up of the xenophobic card, to deflect attention from the major challenges facing public healthcare delivery: inadequate funding; poor governance, and sharp social inequality which reinforces health inequity.

In an exit poll conducted by the Cable News Network (CNN) during the mid-term elections, 41% of respondents voted for healthcare as the “most important issue facing the country”. Immigration, economy and gun policy received 23%, 21% and 11% of the poll respectively.

Report from the Health & Social Services Sector Strategy Consultation

The strategic consultation of 18-19 November 2013 was convened to review and renew the health and social services strategy for PSI, given that PSI affiliates had adopted a broad Programme of Action at Congress in 2012, including 4 resolutions on health, and, that after wide consultations early in 2013, had agreed a set of priorities in Working for the Alternative.
