In 1975, it became “International Nurses Day” which is celebrated worldwide.
Representatives from major trade unions in both the public and private sectors have raised serious concerns on the possible impacts of the Regional Economic Comprehensive Partnership Agreement (RCEP) which is currently being negotiated in Manila.
The 18th round of RCEP negotiations began yesterday in Manila as civil society organisations express deep concern about the mega trade agreement being negotiated secretly by 16 nations, including the 10 ASEAN members plus Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, Australia, China and India, spanning 50% of the world population and 29% of the world’s GDP.
The Government of India has passed a landmark bill increasing mandatory paid leave from 12 weeks to 26 weeks for women employees working in companies with more than 10 staff. This brings India at third position globally in terms of the number of weeks of maternity leave after Canada (50 weeks) and Norway (44 weeks).
The Peoples’ Forum on BRICS, a network of peoples' movements, trade unions, national networks and civil society organisations, gathered in Delhi, India on 30 March to raise deep concerns over the fact that the New development Bank promoted by BRICS is no different from other IFI's such as the World Bank or Asian Development Bank.
Following two years of negotiations, the Government announced on 18 April the details of an historic pay deal that will lead to significant pay increases for workers in aged residential care, home support, and disability services. This will help to address the pay inequity in the predominantly female aged care sector in New Zealand.

On the occasion of World Health Day, on 7 April 2017, Jan Swasthya Abhiyan (JSA), Public Health Resource Network (PHRN) and PSI organised a panel discussion “People over Profit: Countering the Privatisation of Healthcare” and released a booklet series published by PSI called “Non Standard Work in the Healthcare Sector in South Asia”. The panel addressed issues related to the direction of healthcare policies, the expansion of the private sector in healthcare provision and the informalisation of conditions of employment of the healthcare workforce.
At a meeting organised by PSI, the Forum Against FTAs, La via Campesina and others, more than 100 representatives of people’s movements from southern Indian states discussed the implications of the proposed mega free trade agreement - Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).
PSI provided input to an assessment from the water justice network of development cooperation support for the implementation of human rights. Development partners, including the World Bank, have violated human rights, including with their conditionalities for private sector participation. We call for the suspension of grant and loan programs which implicitly or explicitly promote PPP schemes. The implementation of Sustainable Development Goal #6 on water and sanitation presents opportunities to improve the practices of development partners. We point to the examples of public-public partnerships (PUPs), which are gaining in popularity but have not received adequate support from development partners – in part, because PUPs are not-for-profit. We also call for more rigorous measures to ensure that all rights holders can participate in decision-making.
A Public Services International Leadership Meeting held on 2-3 December 2015 in Washington, D.C. USA and hosted by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME). The objective of this PSI leadership meeting was to explore ways to work together to strengthen the fight against the global push for privatization, linking national campaigns to regional and global dynamics.
PSI submitted case studies from India, Kenya, Argentina and Ecuador on the gender implications of the human right to water and sanitation for the UN Special Rapporteur on the human right to safe drinking water and sanitation. The studies touch on gender implications of legislation, public finance, participatory decision-making, and monitoring.
In 2015, the World Women's Committee (WOC) decided to make Equal Pay the main theme of its celebration of International Women's Day in 2016. PSI has already achieved a lot on this issue, as is widely recognised. It took the lead in calling on its affiliates, the global union federations, the ILO, governments and women's organisations to defend economic rights. PSI is now internationally recognised as a union that defends women's rights at work and in society in general.

In response to the release of the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA) text the 19th PSI Steering Committee meeting that met in Geneva, Switzerland on 17-18 November adopted the following resolution.
Governments must do more to fix the international corporate tax system New research shows that the gap between where companies pay tax and where they really do their business is huge. In 2012, US multinationals alone shifted $500–700bn, mostly to countries where these profits are not taxed, or taxed at very low rates. G20 countries themselves are among the biggest losers. The measures recently announced by the OECD leave the fundamentals of a broken tax system intact and do not stop the race to the bottom in corporate taxation. G20 governments must do more and should strongly support further reforms.
A number of PSI affiliates are concerned about pension fund investments in privatization, a process that is likely to increase under pressure from the G-20 and the OECD. These two documents describe the on-going work related to investment practices and policies of capitalized pension funds.
Unions are increasingly aware that the pension fund investments are unethically made to promote privateers and multinational companies rather than provisioning for the public services and developmental activities.
Public Services International is presenting a special forum at the 9th WTO Ministerial in Bali. This forum aims to shed light in dark corners: Why is a new services agreement required? Why must it be negotiated in secrecy outside the multilateral process? Why are so many developing countries refusing to participate? What benefit will it provide to the majority in the community?
PSI’s Asia Pacific Regional Office is hosting a forum on quality public services on 16-18 October 2013 in Bangkok, Thailand. The forum will highlight discussion on the priority public services issues of the region, evaluating union strengths and strategies to take the issues to a further level.
