In the wake of Superstorm Sandy, public and private sector workers are convening a special discussion to share experiences, lessons learned and best practice proposals for solutions to deal with disaster situations. Trade unionists, community leaders and United Nations agency and international representatives will be attending this session to discuss critical disaster preparedness, response and recovery issues. The aim is to build professional expertise, public services and community capacity for better disaster resilience.

Speakers include Rosa Pavanelli, leader of the global union federation Public Services International, who has been invited by United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon to give a global perspective this week on the role of workers and trade unions in preventing and recovering from natural disasters [UN panel March 6].  

There will also be speakers from 32BJ SEIU, District Council 37/AFSCME (Henry Garrido), TWU Local 100, UWUA Local 1-2 (John Duffy), ALIGN (Matt Ryan).
