PSI affiliate CUPE, the Canadian Union of Public Employees, is celebrating its 50th anniverary in Québec City on 21-25 October 2013.

During her speech on 23 October, PSI General Secretary Rosa Pavanelli told delegates that the attack on union rights is currently the number one priority for public sector unions in every part of the world.

“Trade unions are under attack and have to strike and to fight to have their rights recognized,” said Pavanelli.

Pavanelli praised CUPE for taking stands on a broad range of issues not limited to the employment conditions of members.  Those stands, Pavenelli argued, create bonds and community with the public that will help in CUPE’s efforts to battle attacks on public services.
