No Trade in Public Services

31 July 2013

The recent wave of trade agreements are direct threats to the provision of Quality Public Services. These new agreements encourage privatisation, restrict governments’ ability to regulate in the public interest and create new and powerful rights for large multinational corporations. They are also a threat to democracy and accountability of government. They are being negotiated in secret, without proper consultation and will bind future governments, often regardless of the decisions of national elections, parliaments and courts. PSI urges all affiliates to understand the implications and join our allies to oppose the harmful effects of these agreements.

Peruvian government attacks public sector workers' rights - state workers respond in the streets

15 July 2013

The Government of Ollanta Humala has managed to get the approval by the Congress of the Republic of a new Civil Service Organic Act which, among other things, will remove the right of public sector unions to negotiate wages, determine a model of union organization in the sector, and establish annual punitive assessments with provision for forecast layoffs. Moreover, the Act will allow for the implementation of reforms in the structure of employment and public services without any legislative consultation. The new Act would deny the right of strike in essential sectors, but does not determine which sectors are essential.

LGBT Workers

06 June 2013

PSI is committed to equality for all irrespective of sex, marital status, ethnic origin, national identity, disability, sexual orientation, age or religion, at the workplace, in trade unions and in the broader political, social, economic and cultural context. LGBT workers’ rights are trade union rights, and trade union rights are human rights. Trade unions are committed to fight against discrimination and for an inclusive non-violent society.

Unity of action drives social dialogue forwards in the Andes

16 February 2013
PSI affiliates in Lima, Peru mobilising on World Public Services Day, 23 June 2011

A Network of Andean Public Administration Unions was created thanks to a PSI /IMPACT-sponsored project which ran from 2008 to 2011 in the Andean region. The project led to a comparative study on national legislations and labour practices and helped to create successful joint trade union actions. In a region where human and trade union rights are constantly violated, encouraging progress was made to drive social dialogue forward and to create genuine dialogue for the transformation of public services.

Local and Regional Government/Municipal sector

28 August 2012

Local and regional governments (LRG)/municipal sector workers run essential services in cities, metropolitan areas and territories servicing millions of people and communities every day. Our members work in public administrations; public utilities such as water and sanitation, electricity, and solid waste. They operate public transport and maintain public spaces; work in social, culture and education services such as libraries, museums, kindergartens, schools and universities. They are health and social services workers. Firefighters, emergency, medical first responders and municipal police are also among LRG/municipal workers. PSI defends and promotes the union and labour rights of LRG/municipal workers and advocates their decent working and living conditions so that they can sustainably deliver accessible, quality public services to the local communities and territories they serve and successfully confront the many challenges posed by rapid urbanization and globalization. Join the discussion on PSI's LRG/Municipal Workers Facebook Group.

21 November 2011

PSI award-winning affiliate FENTAP has challenged the management of the water utility Empresa EPSEL S.A. (Empresa Prestadora de Servicios de Saneamiento de Lambayeque) to justify a number of decisions, including possible nepotism in hiring as well as improprieties in contracting and purchasing.

Privatisation

08 November 2011

Quality public services are the foundation of democratic societies and successful economies. They ensure that everyone has equal access to vital services, including as health care, education, electricity, clean water and sanitation. When these services are privatised, maximizing corporate profits replaces the public interest as the driving force. Privatisation is a dangerous trend that must be reversed.

Young workers

04 November 2011

Young people must have the opportunity for decent jobs. Research consistently shows that young men and women are often marginalised. They must overcome more barriers than adults to secure decent employment. Worldwide, young people are three and a half times more likely to be unemployed. Steps must be taken to ensure that young people have access to education, training, and economic opportunities.
