Combined strength and joint action to promote quality public services

18 December 2014
On 18th December 2014, PSI General Secretary, Rosa Pavanelli, and EI General Secretary, Fred Van Leeuwen, signed a cooperation agreement that will strengthen public sector unions in their joint action.

The Education International (EI) and Public Services International (PSI) share a common vision of quality public services.  Both Global Union Federations (GUFs) are committed to strengthening their capacity, national affiliates and individual members. The combined strength of the two organisations is one of the largest global groups representing women, together they represent 45 million workers of whom 60% are women.

Public services are under attack around the world - through budget cuts, deregulation, privatisation and contracting out of services. PSI and EI believe in pursuing progressive, pro-active policies for the delivery of public services and for trade union action for the benefit of members.

Their practical cooperation aims to empower members and to show them the advantages of working together locally, nationally, within and across regions, and globally. In addition to existing cooperation on trade union rights, gender equality and LGBT workers' rights, PSI and EI will explore closer cooperation in Western Africa and the MENA region in the near future, as well as all other policy areas outlined in the agreement.
