What you need to know:

More young people than ever… 1 person in 5 in the world is aged between 15 and 24. 85% of these young people live in developing countries.

Young people are unemployed… 88 million young people are unemployed and about 75 million of these are living in the developing world.

Young people are also the underemployed working poor… About 1/5 of the world’s working poor are young men and women, with 238 million young people earning less than 1$ per day.

Young women are more disadvantaged… Young women face higher unemployment rates than young men, daily confronting widespread discrimination in education, jobs and pay.

PSI's affiliates in India celebrate IYD
31 August 2010

To celebrate International Youth Day 2010, PSI's affiliate, Hind Mahila Sabha Indian Women Association, organised a 2-day leadership workshop in Kanpur city and the All India Association of Inspectors and Asst. Superintendents of Post Offices held a rally and campaign on trade union rights calling for the ratification of ILO Conventions 87 and 98.

International Youth Day 2010

12 August is United Nations International Youth Day. This year, 12 August also sees the launch of the UN International Year of Youth. As the fall-out from the global economic crisis continues, Public Services International (PSI) takes the opportunity to underline the importance of policy measures to secure decent work for young people and ensure that a generation of young workers do not end up in a cycle of unemployment, under-employment and precarious jobs.

Global Employment Trends for Youth

This ILO report presents the latest global and regional labour market trends for youth and specifically explores how the global economic crisis has exposed the vulnerabilities of young people around the world. In developed economies, the crisis has led to the highest youth unemployment rates on record, while in developing economies – where 90 per cent of the world’s youth live – the crisis threatens to exacerbates the challenges of rampant decent work deficits, adding to the number of young people who find themselves stuck in working poverty and thus prolonging the cycle of working poverty through at least another generation.

Six youth network coordinators together with three observers met in Jeju, Korea on 6th April 2010 for the Third APYN Meeting. The meeting was chaired by Ms. Tan Sze Wei, APYN Coordinator, and attended by PSI General Secretary, Peter Waldorff, PSI AP Regional Secretary, V. Lakshmi, and Chidi King, PSI Equality and Rights Officer.
