PSI position

Young people are constantly told “you are the future” but it is important to remember they are the partners of today as well.

Young workers face particular needs, problems and pressures, and are often identified as extremely vulnerable members of society.

PSI supports young people who want to have a say in decision-making and in the changes which affect their lives. PSI will encourage the participation and involvement of young people in using their voices and words to define what they want and what is important. To achieve sustainable change, young people need to be able to speak; and they need to be listened to.

PSI aims to directly address the issues young workers care about and the problems they face. Empowering young workers around the world and letting them speak for themselves - in their own words - is a key priority for PSI. It is a question of social justice and creating a future for the trade union movement itself.

According to the European Youth Charter (2005), it is critical that trade unions take action to:

  • Ensure that issues of concern to young workers are at the heart of trade union campaigns and negotiating agendas;
  • Foster the creation of young workers groups and develop specific activities and training for them;
  • Increase recruitment and retention of young workers in the union; and
  • Improve the accessibility of trade unions and promote effective participation of youth representatives within decision-making bodies.
