The growth of precarious work is an issue that has been exercising PSI affiliates for many years. The rise of the global economy has been marked by the marketisation of public services and policies which drive countries to restructure, outsource, subcontract and privatise their public services. This led to the casualisation and informalisation of many public sector jobs as social spending by governments diminishes and employers look for what they see as a more ‘flexible’ and cheaper workforce. Women and young workers form by far the majority of workers who find themselves in precarious forms of work. More...

The International Metalworkers' Federation (IMF) has planned a global week of action against precarious work on 3-10 October. PSI has associated with the IMF and the other Global Unions and is pleased to support this action.

PSI and other global union federations have chosen to use the World Day for Decent Work on 7 October 2009, to highlight the growth in precarious work and the resultant erosion of workers' and trade unions' rights.

PSI activities for the day include:

  • a joint global unions press conference to be held in Istanbul on 2nd October;
  • action by PSI Colombian affiliates in reaction to a government decision to rescind a bill which would have extended employment rights and protections to temporary workers;
  • and a regional activity led by the Guatemala electricity workers' union.

PSI would be pleased to receive descriptions of your planned activities and/or events including any materials you develop.

The Yes Men Fix the World
02 October 2009

UNI Global Union invites you to a free screening of the new documentary "The Yes Men Fix the World" on October 7, the World Day for Decent Work, in Geneva. UNI is organizing a screening of "The Yes Men Fix the World," a documentary about Andy Bichlbaum and Mike Bonanno: two guys who just can't take "no" for an answer. They have an unusual hobby: posing as top executives of corporations they hate. Armed with nothing but thrift-store suits, the Yes Men lie their way into business conferences and parody their corporate targets in ever more extreme ways - basically doing everything that they can to wake up their audiences to the danger of letting greed run our world. The movie illustrates perfectly why we need a fundamental change to the world financial system and corporate behavior. UNI Global Union and the global union movement need to send the message loud and clear to governments and corporations that the system they have built isn't working.
